about

I had the title and a few words for this kicking about for ages. Then I finished it (along with some others) one afternoon in a photographer’s studio in Armley in about ½ an hour. This is my heresy song and I assume that there’s hardly anyone in the country (or the world) that will agree. It’s still sort of legal to slag off God (though not for long – see ‘Incitement to Religious Hatred’) but questioning economic ‘growth’ is beyond the pale. People burn, plunder, lay waste and move on – all so people can buy rubbish they don’t really want and don’t need. Sustainable development indeed! This was written immediately before the whole sub-prime credit-crunch give all your money to the banks fiasco kicked off

lyrics

Pray For Recession

A double latte frappaccino lite, with Marino cherry shot
In frosted glass, on ice
A cranberry and brie panini with butternut squash mousse
And seared dill reduction - and rocket

And everyone in this city is sure of city certainties and cash
We all need our 80K and bonuses and holidays, no less

I pray for recession, for slow down
Put these people on the dole
I pray for recession, for slow down, melt down
I find it good for the soul

And down on the waterfront, watch the prices tumble into ‘affordable’
The rise again of rag and bone, repair or borrow not to own, at last

A pedicure and sun-shower facial, a detox fruit juice irrigation hot
But not too hot
A decking spare room pond extension, with stressed patio artwork
In granite

And down from the coloured cat, the dancers staff the laundrette for me
Me, I will live mouth to hand, I’ll kill the ABBA tribute bands for money

I pray for recession, for slow down
Put these people on the dole
I pray for recession, for slow down, melt down
I find it good for the soul

I pray for retribution, redistribution, class war – my opinion has never been polled
I pray for the downturn, green turn, less waste, less greed, less rich
Let them have their turn - its only fair

I pray for recession – so there
