This a protest song – on what many would think a trivial matter. A whinging song if you like, it’s fine by me if you call it that. This is a song about advice – the kind of fake advice that companies use to stave off regulation and make themselves look like the responsible good guys when it comes to health and wellbeing – so you get sugary junk manufacturers pretending that their product is ‘an occasional treat’ when they know it isn't consumed like that at all - everyone guzzles their stuff and they make money. They want to sell more, they spend money trying to get people to buy more (and I assume consume more rather than just leaving it in a cupboard before throwing it away).

They must know how much of their product is consumed but they engage in this conspiracy of fantasy where everyone can consume more all the time ‘occasionally’. It’s the hypocrisy and the pretence that I don’t like. If their products were ‘an occasional treat’ they’d make a lot less money. They know this. Or they’re monumentally stupid. Or they think we are – inhabiting a world where chocolate is an occasional treat, where ‘sharing bags’ are actually shared, where strong lager isn’t drunk by alcoholics and where your local bookies is full of people having ‘fun’.

lyrics

Treatwise

Be treatwise
And gamble responsibly
Enjoy a single glass of wine
Occasionally

And when the fun stops, stop
And a sharing bag is for the whole - family
Or re-seal for another day
Or pass round your hipster friends
Bond via small amounts (of chocolate)

Be treatwise
Three chunks of creamy white (a day)
And fifty pence each way
Don’t crash through red food traffic lights

And a payday loan
To help you get by
For a few short days
Until payday
Affordable and flexible

And the industry wants you to buy less
The industry wants you to stay healthy
And the industry wants you to stay within your means

And be treatwise
Eat five fruit and veg a day
And hardly any fried chicken (with secret ingredients)…

Be treatwise
Extra strong lager is not for alcoholics
And high stakes are not for addicts
And the meat comes from smiling farms

And the sugar and caffeine content
Is written on the bottle
Where we all make
Informed decisions

And the industry cares if you get fat
The industry doesn’t want your money
And the industry wants you to cut down and be…

Treatwise

Portion control…
