about

All that chocolate hearts, roses, cards and quilted teddy bears stuff is such nonsense – It's corporate consumerism backed by a kind of moral obligation - and I think we should resist it! I’m sick of being told by the advertising industry how to behave. Love is good but why express it through jewellery, rabbits with hearts sewn on made in China and set menus at twice the normal price?

There's also a horrible sexist element - the notion that women might pretend to be clever and strong and equal and all that but what they really want is to be patronised and reduced to being pink and 8 years old again.

If you want romance you should die for a just but hopeless cause or something, not just nip into Thorntons.

But this is not an angry song. In fact it's a love song - even a romantic song. A real one. So there!

lyrics

Valentine’s Day

I don’t do Valentine’s Day
And all those multiples of 365
Don’t mean that much to me

I don’t do flowers and cards
Left on a window ledge to bend and starve
And remind myself of me

I don’t do jewellery
The chains and bracelets
And the rings that bind

But I could love you, I could love you, I could love you

I don’t do weddings with balloons
And broken vintage cars on wet afternoons

You say I could do this for you
But each time I do a little piece of me dies
And there’s all too little of me

Yeah I can do pompous and po-faced
In un-relaxed you know I specialise

But I could love you, I could love you, I could love you

I don’t do Valentine’s Day
